Bassenthwaite is an ideal location from which to explore all of the Lake District, the Cumbrian and Solway Coast, the historic border city of Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall and the picturesque Eden Valley.

This is excellent walking and cycling country, with many walking routes available direct from the cottage. The new Altura Mountain biking trail in Whinlatter Forest is proving to be extremely popuIar. If you enjoy water sports, then Bassenthwaite Sailing Club offers sailing opportunities, and there are many watersports available on Derwentwater, including windsurfing, rowing and canoeing.

For eating out here is the popular Sun Inn dining pub in Bassenthwaite village, and a good choice of other places to eat out within easy reach. Keswick is less than 10 minutes away, where there is a good choice of shops, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, together with a range of attractions for all ages.

Castlerigg Stone CircleThe Bassenthwaite Osprey viewpoint is less than 5 minutes away in Dodd Wood, opposite Mirehouse, where the house and gardens are well worth a visit. Here you will find St. Bega's church standing in a delightful spot beside Bassenthwaite Lake, which itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, supporting a variety of waterfowl and the Vendace, a fish unique to the lake.

Other nearby places to visit include Castlerigg Stone Circle, the Cumberland Pencil Museum, Thornthwaite Galleries and Keswick's popular Theatre by the Lake,

Within a pleasant drive are the Lakeland towns of Grasmere and Ambleside and Cockermouth, (Wordsworth's birthplace), and villages such as Hawkshead and Near Sawrey, where Beatrix Potter lived.
